Make-A-Wish

March 19, 2014 By Dave Chase

Advanced CFO Solutions has experience wonderful growth in the past year and as a result felt a strong desire to give back to the community.  As a result the company decided to align ourselves with an organization that we felt is dedicated to giving to others and then try to assist them in every way we could.  Selecting that organization was a moving experience for our company.  Ultimately we decided on supporting the Make A Wish Foundation.  Not until after our selection did we discover a close personal connection we had with Make A Wish Foundation.  One of our partners, Kent Thomas, had experienced their generosity and assistance during a particular difficult time in their family’s life.  In addition to the personal tie, we all began to feel connected as we learned of some of the needs in our own communities that Make A Wish is striving to assist with.

When Kent’s son, Nathaniel, was 6 years old, he was showing signs of ADHD. Their family and physicians tried many different treatments to help Nathaniel, but nothing seemed to help.  He was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystropy the year he turned 8.  This genetic disorder does not allow the body to create the enzyme that breaks down fatty acid on the brain, which then affects their ability to function.  Unfortunately, they learned that there is no cure or treatment for this illness. Later that same year, Nathaniel was nominated for Make A Wish. In July when he turned 8, his wish was to go to meet Mickey and Mini Mouse and to go to the beach with his parents and his 4 sisters. His wish was granted and they were treated to a most unforgettable family vacation to Disneyland, Sea World, and the beach. He was able to enjoy a breakfast with the Disney Characters and his sisters particularly loved the special treatment of not having to wait in line for the rides.

Shortly after their memory-making trip, Nathaniel lost the ability to walk and later that year, he could no longer speak. It was a hard year for Nathaniel but he was a fighter. Miraculously, he lived to be 18 and ultimately passed away in 2006.

After learning about these amazing children and those who dedicated their lives to helping them enjoy final moments with their families, we became fully committed to supporting them in any way we could. Advanced CFO Solutions held an event where we divided up our team and their significant others and went shopping for 12 ‘Wish’ children. We bought them each backpacks with toys, games, and activities that they can enjoy while traveling on their vacation. We later delivered these packages and Make A Wish was as grateful for our service as we were for the impressions they left on us as we, in a very small way, tried to assist them.

We at Advanced CFO Solutions are fully committed to supporting Make A Wish Foundation.  If you’d like to help us when we again organize an opportunity to bless these young people and their families, please let us know by reaching out to one of our team.
