How will you measure your life?
One of my all-time favorite books is Clayton Christensen’s How Will You Measure Your Life?. I try to read it once every couple of years. I have started reading it again this year and it has really impacted my feelings about what success is. I ask myself, “If I don’t like what I am doing, can I really call it a success?”
Fortunately for me, I really like what I am doing; but where am I spending my time versus what I feel is really important? I spend a significant amount of time working. Most of it consists of client work, business development, and talent management, but I also spend a lot of time on voluntary service that I also enjoy. Additionally, I am spending more time teaching at the university level which brings great satisfaction. But alas, it seems my family relationships take a back seat again!
Clayton hits the nail on the head when he says you spend your time where your heart is. If you truly value your family, you need to spend time with them. It’s the same in the business world: when you have scarce resources, you allocate them to the areas that you feel are the most important. You need to do the same thing in your family life. It’s time to step back and spend some time with your spouse and kids, and focus on what you say is truly important to you. If you don’t, then you are sending a loud and clear message to everyone, including your family, about what is really important to you and what is not.
Even if you’ve read it before, if you currently don’t have time to read Clayton Christensen’s book (because it’s not that important to you), you can take 20 minutes and listen to his Ted Talk and see if it helps remind you what is important in your life!
